Namaste, Bansuri Lovers!
You’ve been working hard but have seen that even dedicated students often get stuck because of some common mistakes that silently slow down their progress.
The good news? Most of them are easy to fix once you know what to look for.
1. Wrong Posture & Flute Holding
Mistake: Holding the flute too high or too low, slouching, or raising shoulders while playing.
Problem: This creates tension, affects breathing, and produces a weak, airy tone.
Fix:
Sit straight or stand tall with relaxed shoulders.
Hold the flute at a 45-degree downward angle.
Left hand on top, right hand below (for right-handed), elbows slightly away from body.
2. Incorrect Embouchure (Blowing Technique)
Mistake: Blowing too hard or with a big hole between lips.
Fix:
Form a small “O” shape with your lips (like gently blowing a candle).
Start with a soft “tu” sound instead of forceful air.
Practice tip: First produce a clear “Sa” — it should sound pure and steady.
3. Lifting Fingers Too High
Mistake: Raising fingers too much while playing, which slows down speed and causes air leaks.
Fix:
Keep fingers close to the holes — only 1–1.5 cm lift is enough.
Imagine your fingers are gently dancing on the holes, not jumping.
4. Tense Hands, Shoulders & Body
Mistake: Gripping the flute tightly or keeping the whole body stiff.
Fix:
Shake your hands and shoulders before every practice.
Hold the flute lightly — like holding a baby bird.
Breathe deeply and carry a little smile while playing. Tension disappears when you enjoy the music!
5. Playing Too Fast, Too Soon
Mistake: Jumping to fast taans and complicated bandishes before mastering slow playing.
Fix:
Follow the golden rule: Vilambit (slow) before Madhya before Drut.
Spend 70% of your practice time playing slowly with perfect tone.
Speed will come naturally once slow playing is clean.
6. Ignoring the Tanpura / Shruti
Mistake: Practicing without a drone or tuning app, leading to wrong pitch and poor sur.
Fix:
Always practice with a tanpura app (set to Sa-Pa).
Start every session by tuning your flute properly.
Train your ear daily by singing along with the tanpura first.
7. Poor Breath Control
Mistake: Taking shallow breaths while playing.
Fix:
Use the breath exercises from our previous blogs.
Breathe from the diaphragm (belly expands).
8. Not Using Holes Properly for Komal Swaras
Mistake: Misusing hole-cover technique for komal swaras.
Fix:
For komal Re, Dha, etc., gently slide the finger to cover 80% of the hole.
Practice slow meends between notes (e.g., Sa to Re in Raga Bhairav).
Start with very slow speed until it sounds smooth.
9. Irregular & Short Practice Sessions
Mistake: Practicing only when in mood or for long irregular hours.
Fix:
Follow the golden 15–20 minute daily rule.
Consistency beats long, irregular sessions.
Even 10 minutes of focused practice every day brings faster progress.
10. Not Cleaning & Maintaining the Bansuri
Mistake: Leaving moisture inside the flute or storing it improperly.
Fix:
After every session, clean the inside with a soft cloth on a stick.
Store the flute in its case, away from direct sunlight and extreme heat/cold.
Oil the thread joints occasionally for better sealing.
